If you already know that physics is your passion, the Fast Track PhD is the right degree for you. As an excellent BSc graduate, you can jumpstart your research career by directly moving on to the PhD level. During the first two semesters, you complete advanced courses while already starting your own research project. The Fast Track can be completed in collaboration with all participating research institutions on campus, including the PRISMA Cluster of Excellence.
JGU offers a special opportunity for the most qualified applicants holding a bachelor's degree in physics. They can enter our PhD program directly and obtain their PhD in four years.
For the top 10% of each year we offer access to the Fast Track - PhD Program at JGU. For students who get access to the program but miss certain grades we offer individual training opportunities.
Depending on the individual requirements of each PhD student, starting a career in research at JGU by pursuing a Fast Track PhD may be a good fit and saves a lot of time. Beginning with the Pre-Doc-stage, excellent students get access to a four-year-PhD program.
Instead of aiming for the Master's degree, our Fast Track PhD students can pursue their doctorate right after graduating with their Bachelor's degree. This helps students to focus on their career in science and research earlier.
JGU was awarded two institutions of excellence in the field of physics in the Federal Excellence Initiative, namely the PRISMA Cluster of Excellence and the Graduate School of Excellence MAINZ. In total, the faculty in physics amounts to around 70 professors and some 300 academic staff members.
Students have the opportunity to take part in large-scale experiments at the MAMI and TRIGA or at other on-campus research partners, including the HIM and the MPI. Other opportunities to be part of global experiments are at the LHC/CERN (Geneva, Switzerland), GSI (Darmstadt, Germany), and Fermilab (Batavia, U.S.).
Pursuing our individual PhD means that PhD students can choose their academic supervisor ("Doktorvater" or "Doktormutter") among our renowned professors. Most of them provide the opportunity to supervise dissertations.
The relationship between our PhD students and their supervisor lays the foundation for a successfull career in academia. Our professor will help PhD students integrate their research into the discipline and build up a network.
